Our inquisitive, not so well mannered, yet well mannered, Spinone has been with us now for 3 months. To explain this, she can be the wisest and most loyal dog, I have ever seen. On the opposite end, she can be the most stubborn and disloyal dog, I have ever seen. It has been more good than bad, but she has her days. We have had our fair share of funny moments and not so funny moments. But, we are enjoying her personality, playfulness, companionship and eagerness. In just 3 months we have trained her very well, but she still has her moments of naughtiness and when she catches a scent or sees a rabbit or bird you can forget any command or willingness to obey. After all, she is a bird dog and can hunt like nobody’s business.
I am proud to say that when she is off leash as I like to train her to be, she is responding pretty well to when I say, “to the house.” She runs to our home and to the front porch where she sits and waits for me to reward her with a small cube of sharp cheddar cheese. “Down,” is another command she is getting pretty good at, while instead of just having her lay down when walking, I am trying to do it while she is in stride or on a scent. It is not easy, but I have noticed with her that patience, repetition, and rewards go a long way as she remembers really well.
Overall it has been a fun transition for us all, and seeing her respond to commands and most importantly play and be gentle with our son is the best of them all.
